Of course although most of your household heat is lost through your roof and walls, it also escapes from other areas too - through the floor and the windows and doors.
Insulating Floors
Drafts through floorboards in wooden floors can be insulated with mineral wool, in much the same way as lofts are insulated. This is done by lifting the floorboards and laying the insulation on top of special netting which is supported between the joists.
You can also use a silicone sealant to seal up cracks in skirting boards and gaps in floorboards to stop drafts. Sealing the gaps in this way could save around £25 a year on heating bills and insulating under the floor will save an extra £45 on top of that.
Under floor heating (pictured right), is one step ahead of insulation, providing a comfortable heat that surrounds you, rather than rising from an unsightly radiator and then disappearing through the ceiling. This can be fitted by professionals or is available to buy in DIY kits, for the more intrepid home improver.
Alternative Types of Insulation
Of course, insulation doesn't have to be made from rock wool or other traditional materials. People who want to insulate their home to reduce their carbon imprint are also looking for greener forms of insulation material such as recycled glass, recycle plastic and old newspaper.
The Natural Collection offers a range of environmentally friendly insulation products, available to buy online, such as the recycled newspaper loft insulation, pictured left.
The government recently announced it's Home Energy Saving Programme . It is designed to help householders in the UK in the long term, by making their homes energy efficient - find out if you are eligible.
Insulating Doors and Windows and Fitting Double Glazing
Double glazing can save up to 25% on your annual heating bill, as well as soundproofing and excluding draughts. With year on year savings, if you manage to get a bargain double glazing deal then the windows will pay for themselves after a while.
It is also a good idea to get upvc doors and upvc windows, or failing this, ensure that draughts around your existing external doors have been properly excluded with draught excluding tape and other items to keep the cold out and prevent the heat from escaping.
